University of Colorado President George Norlin commisioned the study and construction of Colorado Stadium in 1924. The stadium was built in a ravine to save excavation costs and cost just $65,000 to build. It had bleachers made of wood and seating for 26,000 fans. Colorado Stadium was renamed for Coach Frederick Folsom in 1944. Present renovations have increased Folsom Field's capacity to 53,750. After 28 years of AstroTurf, Folsom Field returned to natural grass in the spring of 1999. The project, which included biothermal underground heating, cost $1.2 million.
